last friday night on the Australian radio station Triple J, David and Stephen Dewaele from 2manydj's / Soulwax and James Murphy and Pat Mahoney from LCD Soundsystem took over the air waves for three hours.

my flatmates and i tried to stay up and listen to it live but a 10pm start in Sydney is midnight in Auckland. so after streaming it for 15mins we decided to go to bed and find a podcast of it over the weekend.

and i did. someone on Resident Advisor called DJL posted a link to to download all three hours of the show.

Soulwax had an hour long guest mix on Belgian radio station Studio Brussel the other day. If your heading to Rhythm and Vines for new years and abit curious as to what 2manydjs a selecting in their mixes atm this is a great insight listen. ok so I totally heart the music that Diplo produces, his colab with Switch this year as Major Lazer has totally changed my perspective of what good music is. Robyn’s track Konichiwa Bitches was easily one of my favourite tracks of 2005 and now I see that Diplo and Robyn are working together for Robyn’s sophomore album. sweet!

it's due out next year and bound to build some momentum with Diplo kicking things off on his Twitter page::

“Shout out 2 robynkonichiwa for breakin the couch in Vegas and making my favourite track of 2010 ! Dancehall queen! She whoa whoa”.

He also says things are sounding “like lil orphan Annie meets Dawn Penn inna London rave… I think we broke dubstep”.

“What I’m gonna do at Big Day Out is a real production. I’m working with the design company from Montreal who do the LED light installations for Cirque du Solei, really cutting edge stuff. I’ve worked with them before on a tour in America last year with John Digweed, and we did that on a really tight shoestring. And I went back to them and basically said, if I was to give you an unlimited budget, what could you come up with? And they presented me with this stage production which is just gonna blow people’s heads off, it really is. And the first time anyone is gonna get to see it is in Australia [and New Zealand!!!].”

“It’s constructed out of lots of tiny screens, and the visual content, I’ve seen some of the treatments for it and it already looks stunning. They’re custom building this whole stage in Montreal and then shipping it over. I’ve wanted to do something like this for a while, but it’s just been a matter finding the budget to do it. But Big Day Out came to me with a budget, so I could invest that money back into the show, rather than just turning up and DJing.”

“I’ve always wanted to do something more, and do something different. I’m not the DJ who plays all the big anthem tunes …. What I want to do is have something that is separate from my club shows. So this festival set is gonna be an hour and a half long, the music is going to be linked to the visuals and it’s going to be a whole different experience.”

“You’ve gotta play a big sound if you’re playing to 30,000 people, you’ve gotta come in with a crash-bang-wallop right from the get go.”

What's happening in the life of Graeme Sinden right now?

A lot. It's been a pretty action packed day actually. I got up early and started doing DJ mixes, I've been doing boring admin stuff and I've been hitting the studio with The Count. We've been working on a new banger. Which is a kind've retarded, dance track...don't know how I feel about it yet. I'll probably have to go in there tomorrow and listen to it again. It's all good.

Do you get a kick out of listening to your own stuff?

Um, I do when it's the finished product. It's that bit in the middle which is a bit frustrating cause you just wanna get it done. Just have it and play it loud. But I do yeah, especially the finished releases.

When you're halfway through I guess you're trying to envision what it's going to be like dropping it in the middle of a club.

Yeah, I think you've got to have that at the fore really. Thinking about club dynamics, and yeah, how it would drop. Trying to build dynamics and elements into the tracks to try and make people go extra mad. It's hard to do when you're in a dark studio, you have to take your [mindset] out of there and put yourself in a Friday night, alcohol fueled, dance floor.

How does your relationship work with The Count? Is it the two of you in the same room or are you emailing mixes back and forth?

Mostly we do all our work in the same room. There's one mix recently where I had to pick up the parts on the Friday...the deadline was two weeks away but I had to go to Japan for 10 days, so I literally started it and then had a couple of days to put the main ideas down. Zipped up the file and sent it to him. He arranged it and put it together. And then I heard it afterwards and I was like 'Oh, cool. Good work' (laughs).

It's a good team because I basically put all the parts together - like I did the bassline and got some vocal chops and got it to him. And [then] he put it together but added a few other things as well. So it's pretty good like that.

Is that the attractive thing about working with someone else? That you have the opportunity to come up with new things that are fresh to your ears because of an outside influence.

Yeah it's the way that collabs work really, you play to each others strengths and if you're a bit stuck on something [having] someone else can re-ignite it. Like if you have an idea which is good but you don't know where to take it, he can come in and go 'Oh this is perfect for this' and he can take it to another dimension that I would never think of. And vice versa. It's good.

How close are you to finishing the record with him do you think?

We don't really know, where just making tunes. [Seeing] where everything fits. We started thinking about it too much and now we're just really having fun with it. We're not really pressuring ourselves to rush it out. We were at the beginning. We had some record company pressures but now they're really relaxed. We're just happy putting out singles and club tunes.

It seems to be working pretty well for you.

Yeah definitely. I think it's a good model. Music's changed now. And it keeps changing and you just have to approach these things differently. Our label's put a lot of other records out but it's different for us. We're a dance act, we work differently, you can't just have two singles and then the album. We're constantly putting out dance singles and getting sort've more hype off that.

It seems more and more that bands are wondering whether they shouldn't just release singles now. That's something that the dance world has been doing for a long long time. There's not so much power with the album anymore.

I agree. And dance music albums are a big anti-climax as well. It's hard to pull them off. There's only a few classic ones, where you think 'Oh this is a great dance album I can listen to all the way through'. There are so few that I go back to. I like mix CDs, I like mix albums. But the dance album you have to approach it differently and think about longevity and the flow of how those tracks are going to work. At the moment all the tracks we've put out are singles are what people want to hear. What they want to play and listen to in a club. They sound good on the radio and that's very much where we've come from. Putting out club tracks.

Do you think then with the album you're aiming for more of a killer mix-tape? As opposed to an album that ebbs and flows? Or somewhere in the middle?

I think somewhere in the middle. You can't just bang it for sixty minutes. You know there's hip-hop tempo tracks and there's dub tracks and there's drum and bass and there's techno records and there's down-tempo things. It's eclectic really which is the way we've always been and the way that we approach music. And we don't think about [specific] filters and tempos and we're not really loyal to any one thing. We're just doing our own thing and having fun. Seeing what happens.

You were just nominated by the UK's DJ Mag for Best DJ and Best Radio Show in the UK. Is that a nice pat on the back?

It's nice yeah. It's nice to get acknowledged. Especially by a DJ magazine which I remember reading when I was growing up. And the acclaim is really cool. Whether I win or not, it's still nice to be up there.

I wondered if with doing the weekly radio show as well as doing mixes and having to listen to so much new music, do you find sometimes that it's all a bit overwhelming?

I think so yeah. I'm someone that likes to feel like I'm not missing out on something and I like to be [first] with things. So I do find myself listening to loads of music, and I'm downloading loads of yousendit links. You know, [looking for] tracks that catch your attention in the first minute, [that are] unique. And...yeah it's difficult. Sometimes your ears just get drained from listening to too much music. You don't know what's good anymore. It's like 'is this good, is this not good?' So you have do it over small periods, when you're excited about listening to music. You can't just go in there and be cynical about it. I don't want to ever be cynical about listening to music.

You're criteria for listening to music must change slightly also, to find what's immediate and current. Of course everyone has their favourite records that they've hated at first, and only after two or three years of them sticking around have they become favourites. Being a DJ that has a show every week, it must be hard to keep a link to that feeling.

It's true. There's such a massive turnover of music, I'm always keeping up to date with new things. I rarely repeat tracks that I've played - even with my DJ sets I like to play what's current. I don't like looking in the past or playing too many classics. So I guess I'm kind've [always] looking for the next thing. But it's difficult, you can skim over music.

When you're listening to something you dont' always figure out how it works in the clubs. I've seen a tune go down [well] and you ask someone what it is and they say 'Oh it's this track' and I've actually [already] got it on my hard drive (laughs). And never listened to it. Or I have listened to it once and thought 'Oh not for me'.

Is it encouraging that the marginal club sounds have become mainstream in the last couple of years? I mean you've got Dizze Rascal using Calvin Harris and Armand Van Helden doing pop collabs, it's not really marginal anymore. They're Number One tracks.

Yeah. And the UK's having a really good year - dance music in the UK has had a great year. Dance music has really come back in a big way, more than bands. Not there should be a dance music vs bands kind've thing, but it's definitely been significant. Like the big pop tunes have been dance records. The success of that stuff has been amazing, like plays on the A-list on Radio One. Which it means it's all through the day. It's really good to see and it's a really healthy thing. And it means that it opens the door for us when we're making dance music and it means [more people] will be more open to hearing it and they'll understand it.

It must also mean with your own stuff that it'll be that little harder to try stay ahead of the curve. With a lot of people getting used to these sounds.

Yea it's good though. It's a challenge isn't it? I think that whilst this stuff has become a bit more mainstream, I think there's still room for experimentation. For things that people haven't got their head round yet. It can only be good for the scene.

Fake Blood is on the lineup for your spots here on the Summadayze tour. You toured here with him earlier in the year. Was that fun?

I'm a big fan. I found him on MySpace actually and signed a track to Cheap Thrills. It's nice to see his rise - and I was actually a friend of his before that - and see him come through as Fake Blood. We had a really good time on that tour just having a laugh and playing together. So yeah, to see that he's on the lineup and to be back together should be cool.

A summer festival run in Australia must be pretty attractive in the middle of a UK winter...

Ah yes, that's the other major plus about coming over and doing the festival. We hit it at the right time. When your really hot and we're miserably cold. I think I've done well.

[edit: Sinden isnt coming to New Zealand's Summadayze and it doesnt look like he's coming the our country at all this summer. all good though, he was here a couple back.. Fake Blood are playing at Rhythm and Vines tho so : coool ]

I last saw State Of Mind play at Coherent a couple months ago and it was an epic night of wall to wall drum'n bass. From what I remember, their approach to mixing that night was to cut out the atmospheric breakdowns and just hit it with w2w dnb. Maybe I don’t remember correctly, maybe I was a bit drunk... Either way it was a massive night.

Soo i'm rather excited about this gig on Friday night (20th November) where State Of Mind will be playing live with MC Woody and supported by Sambora and P.Diggs from Shapeshifter, DJ Format and Lophonix.

This will be one of the biggest nights in Auckland for the tail-end of 2009, with State Of Mind flying high off the back of the success of their second album Faster Than Light. To add further catalyst to the night, Shapeshifter released their new album The System Is A Vampire a couple days ago so P.Diggs and Sambora will be hanging to lay down some of their new material. Their new album is really good by the way.

WTF? (What The Fuck?)

I don’t understand what’s going down. They (media, press releases etc.) say that the third announcement in October was the final line up for Rhythm and Vines 2009, which makes it a total of 72 artists..

2008's full line up had 115 artists... were is the money for the missing 43 artists going???

Surely there is going to be a 4th announcement. There was last year...

The forth and final announcement for the 2008 festival was on 13th November 2008 (a year ago yesterday) and included big names such as Public Enemy and Ladyhawke, but the supposably third and final announcement for this year was a month ago.

The second Big Day Out announcement for Januarys 2010 festival was on Wednesday this week, so maybe the Rhythm and Vines promoters didn’t want the final line up to be in the same week as a BDO announcement. But still, it has been widely reported that last months announcement was the final..

so yeah, back to the start… what’s going down? Surely if Rhythm and Vines were cutting back by 42 artists for the 2009 festival, they would say so and make our tickets cheaper. Or have they got some massive artists up their sleeve, kinda like how they announced Public Enemy in the final announcement for 2008.

I hope they are sitting on some big names and my pick is that a fourth and final line up will be announced within the next fortnight.

Otherwise I’m gonna be slightly pissed.

Juan MacLean Drummer Jerry Fuchs Has Tragically Died

Jerry Fuchs has tragically died over the weekend in Brooklyn. Fuchs was a renowned drummer, plying this trade to DFA bands !!! and Juan MacLean. On Saturday night he became stuck in an elevator and attempted to climb out. unfortunately his clothing got caught and he fell five stories down the elevator shaft. he was announced dead in the early hours of sunday morning at Bellevue Hospital Center.

Birkenhood sends our condolences to his friends, family and band mates.

We thank Fuchs for his contribution to one of our favourite record lables (DFA) and two amazing bands.

without sounding uncaring and selfish we hope Juan MacLean can get through this though time and still make it to New Zealand for their show this summer.

St Jerome's Laneways Festival

Auckland will host New Zealand’s first St Jerome's Laneways Festival. It all started in Melbourne in 2004 by Jerome Borazio and Danny Rogers when they decided that summers in Melbourne would be far better with more live music in unique settings.

They started by putting on bands in a Melbourne club called St Jerome's Bar each Sunday afternoon featuring fresh bands of the time like The Presets and Architecture in Helsinki. Then it became a monthly club night called Brains featuring the Avalanches as resident DJ’s (luckeey!!) Still not satisfied that they were doing enough, Borazio and Rogers decided they could close the lane behind the bar, remove the bins and throw a proper laneway party.

From there St Jerome's Laneways Festival spread to Sydney, Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and now Britomart Square in Auckland’s CBD.

So far, the Auckland edition of the festival features:

Over at the highly recommended Pedestrian TV we found some interesting info on K.I.M who is one of the guys from The Presets. K.I.M is to release Selected Jerks 2001-2009 which is a two disc album featuring some of his best material from the past eight years. The first disc contains twelve original tracks and the second disc features ten remixes. Set to be released on October 30th, this album is sure to add some oonst to your electronic music collection.

One of my favourite bands LCD Soundsystem [who are doing a dj set at Rhythm & Vines (oh yeah!!)] are prepping their soon to be released third album and if it’s anything like Sounds of Silver and their self-titled debut, it should be pretty bloody goood.

On facebook front man James Murphy made some comments on LCD SS’s new material::

"The art is photos by Ruvan Wijesooriya and graphics by DFA super-designer Mike Vadino of Bureau. The mastering for the vinyl (and digi) is by my engineer hero, original mentor, and best vinyl cutter ever, Bob Weston of Shellac at Chicago mastering. I'm honestly really excited."

"Should be a certain number of free downloads of the new single when it's ready. I must say, though, that we're trying to make the vinyl include a free download, so I recommend that. Mainly because we worked really hard on the art and the mastering, and we're proud of it."

The album is said to be released in March 2010.

The band is also releasing a new single which isn’t off the new album. Due for release in November, the track is entitled Bye Bye Bayou and is a cover of Alan Vega's 1980 original.

holy shit what a crazy seven days ive had and now its the weekend again.

it started last Thursday with my radio show on 95bFM , then hit the casino with a mate. we didnt go to gamble but to drink, watch all the zombified slotslaves mope around and make use of the cheap parking.

on the mission up to krd we stopped in at a dairy to pick up some herbels. this was the first time i have done party pills in years, they were ok but made me drink alot.

we went to Studio where MSTRKRFT were playing. their set was epic as, with very little breakdowns in the tracks and a tune selection that stuck hard with electro. they finished with Bohemian Rhapsody which in context was cool.

I went to beautiful Whangamata for the weekend and on the way back we broke down in Ramarama which is about 45minutes away from home and a real long distance when the car wont work...

a couple days later Metronomy played at the Monte Cristo room in Auckland. this was crazy for a Tuesday night, with people hanging from the rafters and everyone getting into the party feel of the night .

RadioLadio, My Heartbeat Rapid and Holiday were stand out tracks for me as Metronomy worked through a 50 min set.

Moron Says What?! played a high energy set first, but this only lasted about 25 mins. this was a shame as everyone was getting real into the music and then they ended. whether it was because they ran out of songs or because metronomy needed 45mins to set their gear up is beyond me.

Big Day Out at Mount Smart Stadium :: January 15th

I haven’t missed a BDO since 2002 but looking at this first line up that could be about to change. Unless the 2nd & 3rd are totally epic, (and they could be) things aren’t looking too flash for this instalment of what used to be a festival of fresh talent. Sure the BDO has always included the big dinosaur bands (Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Foo Fighters, Neil Young), but they have always balanced it out with new artists on the cusp of mainstream acclaim. then again I admit that I haven’t heard of some of these groups such as Bluejuice and Karnivool but to me the line up (and last years) seems a bit stale with Lily Allen, Peaches, Dizzee Rascal and Mars Volta all been to New Zealand a lot over the last couple years. On TV3's Sunrise this morning they interviewed the guy who selects the BDO line up & he said that he went for artists who currently have new albums out, leading me to believe that Big Day Out are now focusing on providing high rotation artists for the masses rather than breaking fresh and exciting music. Then again I could be shooting a massive hole in my foot if they bring it massively in the second & third announcements.

Joe Goddard from Hot Chip releases Solo LP

Joe Goddard from Hot Chip (vocals, synthesizer, percussion) is to release a solo album in early November entitled Harvest Festival. The album will be released through Greco-Roman records, an imprint which Goddard co-founded. So apparently the album sounds like:: "winds from woozy ambience to the polyrhythms of London's clubland and back again, and has a strange fixation with fruit”… Nice, I think?

I like the inter-connectivity of USB devices and i also like CDJS, so when I read about the features of Pioneer's new CDJ-2000's I was like "Yus!" :: Untill i saw the price tag and then i was like "Fuck!"

At €1799 (approx $5400 NZ) each, you probably wont be asking for a set of CDJ2000's this December and at that price I'd say the nightclub owners will not be rushing to upgrade.

Despite the off-putting price tags, the new features of these CDJ's are quite impressive::

Pioneer have developed a new data management system called Rekordbox. It is the intertexuality of the Rekordbox which is rather impressive, as it is able to play audio media from CD, DVD, SD and now USB. For me, this spells the end of the tedious job of burning disks and then having to write/ fit the track-listing on the front of the disk:: well it would if I could ever actually afford the CDJ2000’s.

It also has a 6.1-inch full colour LCD screen and a system called Pro DJ Link which gives users the ability to process files through the CDJ2000’s USB or SD outputs to other devices via LAN.

Yes Steve Aoki is returning to Auckland to play at the Studio this October.

I made a big effort to see him play earlier this year, but unfortunatly he played at Summadayze (ooh dear).
My girlfriend and I (thanks Nerdy Frames for my one) had tickets to see Eric Prydz, Calvin Harris, Boys Noize and Steve Aoki, something I was very excited about. However, Eric Prydz pulled out acouple weeks before the gig, but I thought 'oh well', I had just been to Rhythm & Vines and Prydz is abit cheese anyway - it's not too bad.
Boy was i wrong... When we got to the venue there as a printed out piece of paper stuck to the wall next to the toilets saying::

We were like WTF!? whopps, the promoter must have forgotten to tell us all about the major shake up. I now had to stand/ lean through a couple hours of shit music (Tim Phin & the Pot Belleez) just to get to see Boys Noize (who totally owned b.t.w). but even worse, we now had the prospect of waiting for the Utah Saints to play before Steve Aoki would eventually take to the decks in the early hours.. [we went home]

I was informed a couple days later that Aoki played a killer set.

So it makes me happy to know that ill be able to see him play in a couple of weeks up on K'RD.

Daft Punk is Playing at My House

This whole 'Hero' series is abit weird for me. Is it ok to like it? My flatmate had Gutar Hero and I must admit that drunkenly strumming out to Bloc Party's Helicopter and hearing the fake crowd go nuts for me was pretty sweet.

But then South Park ripped it to pieces and suddenly it wasn't so cool to be standing in the lounge rocking out with a plastic gutar, thinking that the rest of the party thought your talented.

Now DJ Hero is about to hit the market and I'm feeling even more dubious about this version than its predecessor . I guess it is an interesting idea, and Activision have got some good DJ's/ producers onboard, but I feel that the game play doesn't correlate to actual DJing (i.e the green, red and blue buttons).

According to the all-knowing Wikipedia the game play goes something like this:::

Notes will travel in an arc across a spinning record on screen, and the player will hold down one of the 3 stream buttons to play notes; two buttons reflect the two songs used in that particular mix, and the third represents samples to add to the mix which can be adjusted with the effects dial.

The player must also constantly adjust the crossfader to match onscreen symbols. Certain tracks will be shown on screen as a series of up or down arrow, representing scratching sections, requiring the player to turn the turntable in the direction of the arrows while holding down the button to score points.
"Euphoria" is equivalent to Guitar Hero's Star Power, collected by successfully completing specific phrases in the song mix, and can be released by pressing the Euphoria button, doubling the player's current multiplier.

There is also a "Rewind" meter that builds through consistent successful playing, and once full, allows the player to rewind the song to fix errors in their performance. The player must continue to perform well or their performance meter will drop and they will fail the song.

In fact, and quite shockingly you can 'mix' as Daft Punk , with both Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo being playable characters. I just hope they are doing this as abit of a hype-gen for a possible new album (pleeease!).

Aswell as Daft Punk, there is material from N.A.S.A., Queen, Justice, DJ Yoda, DJ AM, Grandmaster Flash, Dizzee Rascal, DJ Shadow and David Bowie.

DJ Hero will be out in late October.

Modeselektor are to mix Body Language vol.8

Body Language, a mix series from the massive tech / minimal label Get Physical (M.A.N.D.Y, Bookashade, DJ T ...) is about to release volume 8 and it’s mixed by Modeselektor. These guys have only just blown my mind with their collaboration with Apparat as Moderat but now they have gone a step further with an impressive intermingling track list that is sure to get your ears wet.

Although I haven’t heard the mix yet, Body Language Vol. 8 appears to have managed to blend material from varying genres (e.g. Boys Noize, Animal Collective, Major Lazer, Busta Rhymes, Rustie and Modeselektor) without trying to go for the often attempted, rarely succeeded “lets do what 2manydjs do” mash up mix.

Body Language Vol. 8, mixed and compiled by Modeselektor will be released through Get Physical Records on September 29 2009. Oh Yeah***

As I've posted previously radio mixes & podcast are a great way to source new tunes. This Fake Blood Essential Mix is 6 months old but it still holds 'ounst' in terms of freshness. There is alot of Fake Blood tunes in the mix which is good for a start, plus just scanning through the tracklist there is material from Simain Mobile Disco, LCD Soundsystem and Diplo (sweet).

Dub Step As Bro

Dubstep? It's a genre undertaking a semi takeover on the dub /drum n bass scene here in Auckland and i got a feeling things could be simular down south. It may not be a total take over but its now aparent that its big 'wooding' bass has a special appeal to the masses. The style is now even crossing over to the electro scene, with new tags popping up such as electro-dubstep and the cool sounding 'laserbass'.

AC Slater and Jack Beats are at the forefront of the crossover sound, combining the traditional sounds of electro with massive dubstep basslines.

mix albums are great, along with radio shows and pod/blogcasts, a good mix album is the best way to find fresh tunes.. come across a DJ that plays sweet tunes, get a copy of one of their latest mixes and copy all their best tunes haha. no. well yeah, it is a smart idea. i am always downloading radio shows and podcasts like Sinden's from Kiss FM to hear what freashness is been dropped.

back on the mix album tip, what's even better that a straight mix album is a double disk release - one cd mixed, the other unmixed. this way you can appreciate the structure/ journey of the music which the DJ has assembled, listen out for those sweet tracks and then just grab the other disk, rather than hunting them down in some record store or in the interhood.

Herve and the Bang Gang DJ's have done just that, with the release of Cheap Thrills Vol. 1 & Bang Gang 12 Inches: A Radicool Compilation.

Herve [pronounced Hervay], aka The Count of Monte Cristal is to release his first compilation for his new record label Cheap Thrills on 5th October. Legendary DJ / Producer DJ AM, whose real name in Adam Goldstein was found dead in his New York apartment last Friday. Having been off the drugs for about ten years, AM had supposably been using again after he was involved in a serious aeroplane crash last year September.

AM and Travis Barker were the sole survivors of a Learjet plane crash in which four other people died. The pair received extensive burns and it was reported that Goldstein was using medication to deal with his injuries and post traumatic stress. According to TMZ drug paraphernalia and prescription pills were found in his apartment.

DJ AM rose to fame through his success as a genre blending DJ and talented producer. He was a member of the rock band Crazy Town and mixed/scratched on albums for the likes of Will Smith, Madonna and Papa Roach. Goldstein was also a favorite among celebrities, DJing at parties for Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey, Jessica Simpson, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and Ben Stiller - to name a few. Most recently AM had been working on a live project with Travis Barker as TRVSDJ-AM.

His final twitter comment, made last Tuesday was a quote from Grandmaster Flash’s song New York, New York ::::
